The RYA Coastal Skipper Course is ideal for those who already have solid seamanship skills but want to take on more challenging coastal passages. This course will build your confidence in skippering through rougher seas, night navigation, and adverse weather conditions. It’s also a great way to prepare for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal exam, as it fulfills part of the sea-time requirements.
The course will sharpen your navigational and boat-handling skills, giving you the ability to manage offshore passages and confidently navigate tidal waters. More than just technical skills, you’ll gain leadership and decision-making expertise, ensuring you’re ready for any challenges that arise on the open sea.
Once you’ve completed the RYA Coastal Skipper Course, you’ll be one step closer to achieving the Yachtmaster™ Coastal Certificate of Competence. For those aiming for that next level, the course helps fulfill the sea-time requirements (30 days, including 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, and 12 night hours), reducing the sea-time requirement by 400 miles and 20 days at sea for those with a Coastal Skipper completion certificate.

The RYA Coastal Skipper course includes five days of hands-on, practical training.
It is a general requirement in sailing that the participant is in good physical shape.

Out in the open sea, you are exposed to the elements and can be subjected to sudden shifts in weather. You’ll want to make sure you come prepared with a variety of clothing options and sun protection. We advise you to bring along with you a list of items that you can find in the following page.
