No matter your experience level, it’s always a good idea to double-check that you’ve packed everything for a comfortable and enjoyable sailing course. Think layers for cooler evenings, shorts for sunny days, and always remember your sun protection. Here’s your essential packing list to make the most of your time at sea:
The Basics:
Footwear:
• Onboard Shoes: Deck shoes, sailing boots, or any white-soled shoes are required to avoid leaving marks on the yacht’s deck.
Clothing:
• Shirts: Opt for lightweight, polyester-based wicking t-shirts or long-sleeve tops. They’ll dry faster and keep you comfortable, unlike cotton, which tends to stay damp.
• Lightweight Jacket: A windproof and waterproof jacket is essential, especially in breezy weather or cooler evenings.
• Hat: A hat with a drawstring is a must to protect you from the sun and prevent it from flying off in a gust of wind.
Sun Protection:
• Sunscreen: Don’t underestimate the sun! Even on cloudy days, the Mallorca sun can be harsh. A high-factor, waterproof sunscreen will keep you protected all day long.
• Sunglasses (with Retainer): The sun is extra bright at sea with sunlight reflecting off the water, so a good pair of sunglasses is crucial. Don’t forget a retainer cord to keep them secure—no one wants their shades going overboard!
Hydration:
• Bottled Water: Bring at least two liters of water to stay hydrated while out on the water.
Comfort:
• Gloves: You might not think gloves are essential, but trust us—your hands will thank you. Opt for fingerless gloves in warm weather or full gloves in cooler conditions.
• Hoody or Lightweight Smock: Perfect for cooler evenings or early mornings on deck.
Additional Essentials:
• Soft Bag: Ditch the hard suitcase—a soft bag is easier to stow away on a yacht.
• Towel: A microfiber towel that dries quickly is ideal for life on board.
• Sea Sickness Tablets: If you’re prone to seasickness, these might be a lifesaver. Follow the packaging for dosage instructions.
• Passport: Bring it along! You may need it, along with a bank card or cash, if you head ashore during the trip.
For Overnight Stays:
• Swimsuit: You’ll definitely want to take a dip at some point!
• Shorts & Lightweight Trousers: Shorts for the day and light trousers for the cooler evenings. Quick-dry surf shorts are ideal as they double as swimwear.
• Torch: A head torch is essential for night courses. A red-light option is even better for nighttime navigation without disrupting your night vision.
Cooler Weather Gear (Spring or Autumn Courses):
If you’re taking a course during the quieter seasons, you might need a few extra items to stay cozy:
• Warm Hat & Scarf: Perfect for early mornings on deck.
• Waterproof Trousers: Rarely needed, but a lightweight set will do the trick for those cooler or wet conditions.
• Layers: Plan to layer your clothing during early morning or night watches. A lightweight jacket with layers underneath will usually keep you comfortable.
Optional Extras:
• Camera: Capture the beautiful moments at sea—just pack it safely to protect it from water damage.
• Classroom Reference Books: If you’re enrolled in more advanced courses like Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper, bringing your books will be helpful.
• Sailing Log: If you already have one, be sure to bring it along to record your progress.
With this checklist, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth and enjoyable sailing experience in Mallorca. Whether you’re basking in the sun, learning to sail, or watching the stars over the open water, you’ll have everything you need for a fantastic time at sea!
